The Sex Pistols ARE punk,
the rest are 'punk-rock', BIG difference.... Amidst the chaos that was the Sex Pistols, it's often overlooked just what a great band they were, and what great records they made. The Pistols were never the tuneless three chord trash merchants they were later made out to be. "They" said the Pistols couldn't play, well "they" must be deaf...
The Sex Pistols might have had their roots in rock'n'roll, but they certainly didn't sound like any other rock'n'roll band. Who needs verse-chorus-verse-chorus? Who sounded like Johnny Rotten! Who said what he said? Steve Jones guitar might not always have been note perfect, but bollocks to that, it's how it sounds; and Jonesy's guitar certainly sounded the business. A genuine wall of sound, relentless full-on rhythm guitar; the perfect foil to Rotten.
Paul Cook's no-nonsense drumming was always the back-bone of the Pistols sound. When it was chaos all around him Cookie always managed to keep things in some sort of order. Glen Matlock's musicianship has never been questioned, and never needs to be, but has full respect ever been paid to his writing ability. Just go and listen to the riffs on the likes of 'God Save The Queen', 'Anarchy in the UK' or 'Pretty Vacant'... Ok, Sid wasn't exactly John Entwistle, but he never wanted to be anyway. When Sid joined he was keen to learn, he practised like crazy – and he could play – maybe just a little, but he could play. It's just unfortunate that towards the end other 'circumstances' got in the way of his budding ability...
The Sex Pistols started a musical legacy that still goes strong today. Though, if people really had been listening, no one would ever have tried to copy them. The Pistols never tried to sound 'punk' or be obnoxious just for the sake of it (there's a difference between having an opinion and being obnoxious). Punk is a way of thought, it's 'Do It Yourself, it's contradicting contradiction. It is not a musical style. The Sex Pistols ARE punk, the rest are 'punk-rock', BIG difference...
